History

Horizon Ag is an LLC joint venture of five large rice seed companies. The LLC was formed in March of 1997, in order to fill a vital need in the support of agricultural technology by serving as a link between public breeding systems and private technology providers. Currently focused in rice, Horizon brings a strong presence to all aspects of crop production and technology management, and an extensive knowledge base via its supporting member companies.

What is it?

Horizon Ag developed the ORYGEN Seed Marketing System to coordinate production and distribution of advanced seed lines from technology providers and public university breeding systems. This marketing system makes quality rice technology widely available through the best qualified (authorized) seed producer/processors and seed dealers. As an intricate part of the ORYGEN Seed Marketing System, Horizon Ag constructed and deployed the ORYGEN.net web-enabled data collection system to track and manage the production, processing, sales and distribution of patented seed technologies.

Why is the ORYGEN Seed Marketing System Important?

Rice varieties are primarily developed through public university breeding programs and sold via coordination with private enterprise. Recent scientific breakthroughs have made new technologies possible in rice production. These include patentable traits, such as resistance to insects, disease or herbicides. Prior to the ORYGEN Seed Marketing System, there was no defined and systematic means for patent holders to profitably develop, test, process and distribute these new rice varieties.

How can I become an Authorized Producer/Processor?

Authorized Producer/Processors are seed companies that provide quality seed production, quality seed processing, seed marketing, sales and technology stewardship. To become an authorized ORYGEN Producer/Processor, one must meet the selection criteria, submit a completed application, and be approved by Horizon Ag.
