PVL04 being harvested in Tunica County, Mississippi.
Based on the performance of PVL04 in its inaugural season of planting, we’re anticipating seeing even more demand for this variety in 2025.
First, PVL04 proved to be a solid performer with yields consistently in the 180- to 190-bushel range and higher yields reported in some fields, particularly in the North Delta.
Second, the Provisia® Rice System continues to show it is an effective weed management system, resulting in some of the cleanest rice fields throughout the region.
Finally, with its performance potential, it’s a good time for farmers to consider adding PVL04 and the Provisia Rice System to their operations to prevent the development and spreading of ALS-resistant weedy rice, and to control grasses and extend the life of both the Provisia Rice System and the Clearfield® Production System for rice.
“A lot of farmers in Southwest Louisiana had to shift to the Provisia system because that was the only way they could bring fields that were overrun with weedy rice back into profitable production,” says Horizon Ag CEO Dr. Tim Walker. “But its adoption in the North Delta, except for some weedy rice problem areas, has been slower. PVL04 may change that. Growers can start to use PVL04 and Provisia rice as a regular part of their stewardship rotation and protect both technologies.”
PVL04 is the first Provisia Rice System variety developed by the University of Arkansas breeding program. Multi-state tests show that it performs similarly to PVL03 in the Coastal Region and better in the Northern Delta Region.
It contains the Pi-ks and Pi-ta blast-resistant genes and has shown very good straw strength. PVL04 matures about two days later than PVL03 and, like PVL03, it has excellent package quality.
“We’ve gotten reports from farmers in Arkansas, Mississippi and other states saying PVL04 exceeded their expectations,” says Walker. “We’re already getting orders for this variety this fall. We’ve also got a lot of experience with Provisia rice and now understand how to best manage Horizon Ag Provisia varieties to boost performance potential.”
Growers wanting more information about PVL04 should contact their Horizon Ag District Field Representative or Horizon Ag seed retailer.
